Define 21st Century Learning.

  1. In my opinion, 21st century learning is about keeping up with the times and integrating technological tools into our teacher instruction. Students have always learned best when they can be participants and not just engage in sedentary tasks. Learning in this day and age has definitely become a more complex task because of how technology is growing in society. When I was in elementary school, using overheads, playing The Oregon Trail game, and watching movies were just about the most technology my teachers ever had the chance to integrate into class. However, in the 21st century, teachers have the Internet at their fingertips and can utilize amazing mediums and pieces of technology like the SmartBoard, iPad, and other tablets. Many websites are student, teacher, AND parent friendly, which is also advantageous to classroom and student development. 21st century learning is advanced and constantly growing.

  2. I agree with Sarah that 21st century learning includes much more use of technology. Today, it would be very strange not to use a computer at least one time for every class in order to do homework or as an instructional tool. Computers are now available in almost every classroom, which is very different from when I was in elementary and middle school. It would be a waste not to use technology such as computers and smart boards because children growing up in the 21st century will understand these types of technologies more than adults at some point due to growing up with them their entire lives. Teachers can find lesson ideas on the Internet as well as use the Internet to show videos or interesting websites during lessons. A teacher who continues to solely use the chalkboard and their own voices might be considered old-fashioned in today's schools and might be asked to incorporate more technology into their teaching styles. Students have so many resources available to them through the Internet, and teachers should be responsible for helping them learn how to navigate the Internet in order to find the best sources offered. Therefore, learning in this era will always include learning how to use the Internet in order to learn.

  3. 21st century learning is teaching students in new and current ways in which they will learn more effectively. In the past, the traditional method of teaching students skills was to have them practice the skill in isolation until perfection was reached (which we all know will never happen). Today, teachers are teaching their students the fundamentals of the skills and allowing them to apply the skill on their own into game situations. This new way of learning allows students to understand when skills are used, how skills can vary in different contexts, how to adjust to unpredictable situations etc. 21st century learning also includes up to date use of technology including smart boards, pedometers, heart rate monitors and online teaching modules. Teachers are learning to break away from traditional methods of teaching so that students can learn more effectively through critical thinking/analysis and current technology.

  4. I agree with everyone that 21st century learning is about incorporating different types of technology into the classroom. The way we learned in school and the way our students will learn are drastically different because of the technology we have now and the technology that is being developed. Students have a lot of technology at their hands so that they can always be learning if they are motivated to do so and they have the skills to make sense of the information at their fingertips. They not only need to be taught how to use wikis, smart boards, and tablets, but how to use the information they find with these technologies and how evaluate the validity of the information they find. 21st century learning also requires that students are motivated to find, learn, and create knowledge and share their learning with others.

  5. It seems that our culture is getting more hands on and visual with learning. The simple class of lecturing and the students writing in their notebooks is not the only way classrooms are being set up. It was even seen in my freshman math class when the top of the line T9 calculators were provided for an entire class. The teachers were there to show us how they worked and could help up problem solve in in different ways. Technology is also needed later in life so the use of it and learning how to use it should be included in school. That allows the students to learn in new and different ways that gets them more involved but also gives them technology related skills that will be used later

  6. 21st century learning, to me, conjures up the image of a more interactive, hands on learning environment. It is getting away from the rote method of learning and makes learning more involved and much more interesting to students. It can also be a way to add more customization to the learning process. Instead of trying to fit everyone into one box, 21st century learning will allow teachers to instruct to the students strong suits and give them the ability to decide how they would like learn. If students are more visual, the learning will adapt to that. If students are more hands on, learning can adapt to that. If students learn best from reading and remembering, the learning can adapt to that. The technology exists to accommodate students to best fit their needs and the next few decades of learning will be an exciting time for schools, if they are properly funded.

  7. To me 21st century learning is different from past methods of learning because of all the technology that is accessible to the students today. In the past the studies that people could do would be limited to the materials that they could obtain. If the library that a student used didn't have a certain textbook (or other resource)than that student was out of luck and couldn't find what they needed. This also limited what teachers could assign, and limited the material they taught for the same reason. But through the evolution of the internet it opened up the world, and made it so that the world was a small community and made it possible to share ideas, and other resources. Teachers also have it easier in the 21st century because of the amount of different ways for students to bring school home with them. With the development of websites like Blackboard Vista a student can now obtain work, or different sources of information that the teacher can post outside of class time so the learning experience is more continuous. Also at the same time as the internet evolved the devices in which we accessed the internet did as well. In this day in age people can now find basically any information right from their smart phone. To sum it up the learning experience of the 21st century is different then any other because of the accessibility of even more information is so much easier than any other point in history.

  8. 21st Century Learning doesn’t deal with a teacher standing in front of their classroom reading out of a book anymore. These days teachers have so much technology at their fingertips, they don’t know how to use it all. With the advancement of technology, most teachers are going from teacher-centered to student-centered approach. This will allow students to be more engaged in a lesson, instead of sitting back and falling asleep to boring lectures. Education technology has had a positive impact on students being more motivated to learn and having more self-confidence. Technology does have some negatives though because students rely on it to save them from really putting in the work. An example is typing a paper on Microsoft Word and having them correct numerous spelling errors. 21st Century Learning has made it much easier on the student to learn, but let’s have them put in a little effort than just a click of the mouse.

  9. 21st century learning has so many applications and definitions. In my opinion 21 century learning defined as the bundle of skills used in the 21st century to process vast amounts of information in a rapid amount of time and utilize the information in day to day life. In the 21st century humans have access to so much more information at the tips of their fingers than ever before and it puts a strain on the human mind to retain all of which is important. Technology is the big difference, using it, keeping up with it, as well as improving it to make learning easier and more interactive is the bottom line.

  10. 21st century teaching is constantly evolving. It combines the old and the new. The original Socratic method of teaching encompassing the teaching of the liberal arts still exists. However it has been completely revolutionized with the introduction of technology in the classroom. The availability of information has never been more prevalent than it is now, with the introduction in the classroom. Basic information is more readily available than it ever was, but in my opinion nothing can be more powerful and produce more understanding than one on one person to person "teaching"

  11. 21st century learning involves presenting the course material in innovative ways. This could definitely involve utilizing technology in the classroom. I also see twenty first learning as active or more engaging learning. I believe that active learning would involve more worksheets and answering questions in class. Escaping the constant lecture will keep the material fresh and also let the students approach from a different angle. Group assignments and activities also give a different spin on how the material is learned. I also enjoy doing team competitions, such as trivia or vocabulary battles that are Family Feud themed. Twenty first century students are connected in a different way and are in a faster world. There needs to be changes and adaptations made to incorporate the cool changes that this world is going through.

  12. 21st century learning treats the learner as an active participant in his/her learning rather than a passive observer. in the 21st century model of education it is the educator's job to draw in the student, to earn the attention of the student, rather than the students job to pay attention regardless of how boring the teacher is. Naturally, i think teachers should be engaging and make learning as fun as possible, I however feel to much ownership for a child's learning is placed on the teacher, that a teacher is expected to teach a child that doesn't want to learn! You can lead a horse to water...
21st century learning is also interactive and instantaneous. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses, and other hard copy reference materials are a thing of the past. Take those same words and add a .com to the end and you find thier replacement.

  13. 21st century learning involves the progress made in the technology fields over the past 20 years and incorporating these advances into the classroom like smart boards, the use of the internet for research projects, heart rate monitors, podometors, and the Wii. The failure to incorporate these new advances in my own curriculum will furthermore set back my own students as I will not adequately prepare them for the world that exists outside the school walls.
